Spring, the Season of Sneezing

I sneeze, you sneeze, we all sneeze. Considering most of us don't know what day it is, there is the issue of having too much time in our heads and worrying about every possible scenario for why we are sneezing.

It could be allergic rhinitis. You think to yourself, plain english please. It is seasonal allergies in their finest blooming fashion.

No, it is not infectious and yes, you should wash your hands after sneezing. For that matter, wash your face too. Allergens land on everything outside; the car door handle, the dusty dashboard and best of all, your clothes.

Symptoms include irritated eyes, congested nose and your sinuses feel like your head might explode. All that histamine that gets released as a reaction to the allergens will also make you quite tired.

Here is what to do:

  1. Every morning and every night, wash your face to remove allergens. It is enough to have them all over your clothes during the day. You don't want them on your pillow at night.

  2. Take up to 4000 mg (4 grams) of Vitamin C daily to act as a natural decongestant. If your digestion is prone to gassiness, start with 500mg. Even at a dose of 2000 mg, Vit. C can be helpful. Check in with me or your health care provider if you have questions.

  3. Take Quercitin (natural allergy controller) twice daily to stop excessive histamine production. Also Zyrtec is helpful but drying. Stay away from Claritin and the like. These dry your lungs out and we know from last week how moist we want to keep them.

  4. Put a HEPA filter in your house and run it all day. Clean the filter regularly.
